all about Brynn

Brynn is definitely my girly-girl.  She loves dressing up, wearing make-up, and anything else that is fancy.  When I asked her if she wanted to try T-ball this summer, she told me no and that it was too "boyish." (She later changed her mind and decided that she wanted to do it.)

Brynn has really struggled the last few weeks, probably since Spring Break.  I think she is just overtired from getting woken up every single morning and being at school.  It's like her body just can't take it anymore.  It is like walking on needles around her, I never know what is going to set off a tantrum.  She won't sleep in her bed anymore, she doesn't like me to leave the house or even leave the room she's in.  She will throw a tantrum over nothing and her tantrums involve kicking, screaming, throwing things, spitting, and sometimes I feel like I need to keep a garbage can close in case she throws up.  They are rough and you can't talk her through it or anything, you just have to let it pass.  It is frustrating in the moment and then after I feel so tender-hearted toward her because it is so not her.  She is usually so happy and easy-going.  I am hoping that the more relaxed summer days and mornings will be good for her and we can get through this little bump in the road.

This maybe sounds negative, but Brynn can be quite ditzy sometimes.  I am surprised by the things that she doesn't notice.  (Last month when she was playing at the Walker's with Harper, Erin overheard her ask Harper if Josie was a boy or a girl.)  It's so funny to watch a light turn on in her head and for her to connect the dots, it just sometimes takes longer than it would for someone else.  This trait is something that I love about her.

Brynn is the best person to surprise.  Her reactions are just the best.  She will squeal and jump up and down and it is all completely genuine.  I love surprising her whenever I can.

Apart from the last several weeks, Brynn is usually willing to go along with whatever and is generally happy.  She doesn't care what people think of her, she is able to laugh at herself, and she can be silly in front of an audience...mostly her family.  She doesn't shy away from talking to strangers.  Apparently, she sits by the bus driver in the morning and talks to her on the way to school.

To be honest, I wondered how Brynn would do academically.  She didn't go to Kindergarten knowing all her letters and their sounds.  She has done great though!  She hasn't really been sent home with any homework so I have had to be diligent in making up our own homework.  I have adjusted it every school term based on what I knew they were working on in school and that has made a big difference.  We started with the basics, like letters and their sounds and have also practiced sight words, math (adding and subtracting), spelling her name, and writing sentences.  Also a lot of reading!  Her hard work has paid off and she has done well this year in Kindergarten.  We will continue to practice, practice, practice over the summer so that she will be ready for 1st grade in the fall.

She hasn't really started to like chapter books yet and still prefers picture books, although she loves the Princess in Black books and we recently read the first book in the Owl Diaries series and she really enjoyed that as well.  She is not reading books independently and still is probably a ways away from doing that.

Here is a typical day for Brynn.  6:50: get woken up by Mom.  7:00: get woken up by Mom.  7:05, 7:10, 7:15, 7:20-get woken up by Mom.  (She is really hard to get up.  If she's not out of bed by 7:20, then I physically carry her out of bed and into the kitchen.) 7:20-7:30: get dressed, comb hair, brush teeth. (I still have to dress her.  She won't do it on her own so it's just easier this way.  We pick out clothes the night before.) 7:30-7:50: breakfast, family scriptures and prayer, get shoes on, jacket, backpack and then out the door to the bus stop.  8:00-11:45: Either on the bus or at school.  11:45-12:30: lunch and read books.  12:30-1:30: watch TV while mom works on the computer, puts Ivy down for a nap, and eats her lunch.  1:30: plan with mom. 2:00-4:00: free time. (Corbyn comes over a lot but otherwise she is pretty good at entertaining herself.)  4:00-6:30: homework, violin practice, free time. (Sometimes we try to get homework and violin done in the 2-4 time period.) 6:30-7:00: dinner.  7:00-8:00: get ready for bed.  8:00: bedtime.  (This is a rough timeline of a day.  I thrive on routine so I try to keep each day pretty close to this schedule.)

Lately Brynn's favorite thing to do for a plan is to have a tea party.  She has to have either chocolate chips or marshmallows with it along with crackers, cereal, goldfish, etc.  She likes to watch Sofia the First while we have a tea party.  For a switch-up, she likes to go outside and be pushed on the swing or if her screen time privileges have been taken away (whenever she throws a tantrum) then we will play board games.  Even when her tantrum is at it's worst, I refuse to take away our plan time.  I've enjoyed it so much more than I could say and with summer and then all-day school our days for plans are dwindling away.

At Brynn's 6-year-old well-check, she was 41 inches tall and 30 lbs.  She is still small but growing according to her curve.  She has grown 3-4 inches consistently each year and added on 4 pounds or so.  According to my doctor's predictions, she will be an even 5 feet tall when she is fully grown.

Brynn has improved in her gymnastics class and is great at cartwheels, handstands, backwards rolls, and bridges (backbends) but she outshines everyone in headstands.  She can seriously stand on her head for so long.  She will do the splits and pikes and everything and still be able to hold her headstand.

Brynn's absolute favorite food is bacon.  She loves it.  I don't share the same love so we don't eat it that often.
