Ivy continues to enjoy clogging. I am so happy she found something that she loves and that gives her confidence. She is good at memorizing the steps to her dances. She loves clogging with her friend, Ali, who goes to a different elementary school (and, sadly, will also be at a different middle school and high school). She goes each Monday and has a jazz class immediately following her clogging class. She will compete in two competitions this spring and have one recital. We love watching her!
Ivy still loves to read but 5th grade has cramped her reading a little. Every month they have been assigned a specific genre that they have to read and write a book report about. While there has been freedom within each genre to pick a book, she has not loved not being able read what she wants. She is looking forward to reading "for fun" again. She is constantly listening to audiobooks at home.
Ivy continues with her piano lessons. She is not great at practicing and tends to cram the night before her lessons which might partly be her fault, partly my fault for forgetting, and partly the fault of busy schedules. But she is doing really well! She got a solid, great foundation with Miss Kim for two years and has been able to build on that with Miss Janna. She recently learned a simplified version of "He Sent His Son" that was challenging and she is learning lots of other songs as well!
As you could tell from her birthday party, she loves musicals of any kind. She could not get over Wicked and I had so much fun taking her to Wicked, Part 2 because she was so excited and so overwhelmed with the goodness of it all. She will get the songs to play on the TV with the lyrics and she will play them over and over until she has all the words memorized.
Ivy struggled at the end of 4th grade, a little in the summer, and a whole bunch at the beginning of 5th grade with headaches. We were getting to the point last fall where the nurse was calling me every day to see if she could take an ibuprofen. I took her to the eye doctor but her vision was perfect. I made sure she had enough water, kept a reasonable bedtime, and didn't let her on screens too much. I didn't know what else to do. The nurse suggested blue-light glasses and, since I could get a 6-pack on Amazon for less than $10, I thought we should give them a try. Well, that was the trick! She has worn them every day since mid-October and I don't think I've gotten more than 5 phone calls from the school since then. She also looks adorable wearing them so it's a win-win!
Ivy was voted onto student council in January to finish out the year. She was so excited! They meet weekly and help plan school functions (like literacy night and field day) and they sell jerky at lunch. She has had a really great time being on student council.
I still pack a lunch for Ivy every day. We don't even bother to check the school lunch menu. She decides what she wants each day on Sunday night so I can pack it for her while she is getting ready in the morning. She takes a main item, a healthy item, and a snack and that's how it's been for all her years of elementary. I used to detest packing lunches but doing just one is easy-peasy! I have always told the kids that once they get to middle school, they are either eating school lunch or packing their own lunches...we'll see if that sticks for Ivy.
Ivy gives hugs liberally-and she give the best hugs. Her current and old school teachers, piano teachers, friends, primary teachers/leaders...really anyone who warrants a hug, gets one! I've heard from more than one person that they are sad if Ivy forgets to give them a good-bye hug at the end of school/class/church, etc. She is a lover and so sweet to everyone.
Ivy still prefers a bath to a shower.
Ivy is my puzzle buddy and loves doing puzzles with me.
Ivy loves learning and excels at school. She enjoys going to school.
Ivy is rarely not happy and her smile can light up a room. She is a good friend and has a positive attitude. She finds joy in small things. She is sensitive and compassionate. She is kind, loving, and a true disciple of Jesus Christ as she tries to follow Him each day. She has a great sense of humor. I love spending time with her and feel so privileged to be her mom.
